I wish to forget it, truthfully. It was the first time I had gone out on a date with another, and I had been deceived so thoroughly -- it is embarrassing.

there's something odd and disheartening about the latter half of that, and she does know the cause-- but is it better or worse than him just saying no thank you, like the milk? it's the why does it matter that she finds herself at an end with and she picks at the ground as the question she wants to ask rises, catches in her throat, leaves her with an expression somewhere between hesitation and uncertainty.
